Why Costumes? Costume design is essential to the overall look and feel of the theatrical production. Costumes establish: Time period/era Personality Style Socioeconomic status

Symbolism in Design: A costume designer may use color and/or patterns to create symbolism with characters. Matching colors for characters who share a relationship with one another Colors to match mood/status Curvy, smooth lines to create softness Jagged, sharp lines to create mood

Symbolism Costume:

First Steps: Read the script and go over any specific costume needs and changes. Meet with the rest of the production team to establish a common production concept. Research! Research! Research! Time periods Style trends for that time period/culture Color inspirations Other versions of your production

Collect Research: Researching for costume design is different than any other research. Collect fabric swatches that will illustrate the texture and colors you are interested in using. Collect pictures of fashion trends you will be using (both in color and black and white) Put it all together in a collage-type presentation

Renderings: Your costume renderings must include: The FULL BODY of the character and the complete costume on LARGE sketch paper Body must be in an interesting pose (not just standing with arms to the side) The name of the character and play, as well as your name

Renderings: Your rendering also must include: COLOR-yes, it must be fully colored and as detailed as possible Include fabric patterns and accessories needed as well as hair-style

Renderings: Renderings also need: Sample fabric swatches of cloth that will be used to BUILD each individual piece of the costume. Pin or glue each piece and layer them together for the full effect Must be presented next to your rendering and match what was drawn
