DETERMINING LOCATION

DEFINE THE FOLLOWING TERMS: o Hemisphere o Latitude o Equator o Longitude o Prime Meridian

Equator: Measures at 0 degrees latitude. This imaginary line cuts the earth in half. North latitude and South latitude. Prime Meridian: Measures at 0 degrees longitude. This imaginary line cuts the earth in half. West longitude and East longitude.

HEMISPHERE: A half of a sphere. Most places can be located in two of the four hemispheres.

DEFINTIONS Latitude: imaginary lines that circle the earth parallel to the equator. They measure the distance north or south of the equator. Anything above the equator are called north latitude and anything below the equator are called south latitude. Lines of latitude are referred to as parallels. Longitude: imaginary lines that measure the distance east or west of the prime meridian. Anything left of the prime meridian are call west longitude and anything right of the prime meridian are called east longitude. Lines of longitude are referred to as meridians.

*****EVERY LOCATION ON A MAP HAS A GLOBAL ADDRESS OR ABSOLUTE LOCATION. THE LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE LINES THAT CROSS GIVE THAT LOCATION***** Practice time……….

SEE IF YOU CAN GIVE THE ABSOLUTE LOCATION OF THE FOLLOWING PLACES: 1. Houston, Texas 2. Madrid, Spain 3. La Paz, Bolivia 4. Cairo, Egypt 5. Sydney, Australia 6. Baghdad, Iraq 7. Tripoli, Libya 8. Tokoyo, Japan 9. Moscow, Russia 10. Havana, Cuba

4 HEMISPHERES:  Northern  Southern  Eastern  Western

HemisphereContinents *continents will appear in more than one hemisphere* Northern Southern Eastern Western

Now find their Relative Location using the four hemispheres: 1.Tokoyo, Japan 2.Houston, Texas 3.Madrid, Spain 4.La Paz, Bolivia 5.Cairo, Egypt 6.Sydney, Australia 7.Baghdad, Iraq 8.Tripoli, Libya 9.Moscow, Russia 10.Havana, Cuba
