Selena Morales Ms. Bakas Period 10
× The Colosseum was constructed in Rome. × Idea for construction came when Emperor Nero purposely started a fire in Rome which swept through most of the city. A civil war broke out but ended when Vespasian became emperor. To get the support from his people, Vespasian demolished the palace of Nero and started construction on a permanent arena. × Construction lasted from 70 AD to 80 AD
× The main purpose for construction of the Colosseum was for entertainment. × Also to show the wealth and power of Roman Empire.
× The architect is unknown. × This is because in imperial Rome, the architect was not important.
× Has the shape of an ellipse. × The many entrances and exits of the Colosseum are in the shape of arches. × Math was also used with the design of the awning that runs the circumference of the Colosseum.
× The Colosseum was definitely ahead of its time. × Was constructed with cement, a new invention in Rome at the time. × Had a water system, trap doors and underground tunnels. × Could seat up to 80,000 people.
× The Colosseum still exists today. × It is a very popular tourist spot.
I think the Colosseum was a great piece of architecture because of the fact that it had many uses including gladiator fights, sacrifices, religious ceremonies and water battles. It also had a water system which was amazing because no other piece of architecture at the time had one.
