Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) As a group-15 minutes-respond to for each article: What is the article saying? List examples from history or contemporary society where the rights listed in your article have been compromised, where they have been protected, or where people have fought for these rights How important/not important do you think this right is? Explain!! 1-least 10-most

Spectrum of Importance? Label article # on TOP RIGHT CORNER Abbreviate article on post-it Put importance ranking # on BOTTOM Place at appropriate spot on spectrum Be prepared to backup your placement!

Questions to Consider – choose 3: 1. What makes 1 right more important than another? 2. What are repercussions of being denied the right to an education? What can happen to an individual and to a society when all people are guaranteed that right? 3. What is the right to an opinion? How can the right to an opinion be denied? How can this right be enforced? 4. Why is the right to a nationality important? What does it look like when a person is denied the right to a nationality? 5. What does it mean to have the right to asylum? 6. Why is the right to assembly a universal human right? 7. What happens to a society when all members are not given the right to a standard of living? 8. Are all citizens in the US guaranteed these rights? Do all citizens receive them? 9. Are there any rights that, if denied, will automatically exclude access to other rights?

Class Response & Homework 1. How would you revise the rank of each human rights articles based on what you saw in the film? Use details from film to support response. 2. What may you have overlooked when we started discussing these rights? (review your initial responses & my comments) 3. What is the most challenging aspect of dealing with humans rights issues? (victims, persecutors, international response, bystanders) HOMEWORK- Research and find an article that covers a current violation of 1 or more of the rights we have covered this week (typed, name/pd upper right corner):  summarize in 1 paragraph  react in 1 paragraph: How was it violated? What is the response? What challenges does this current event present when addressing the rights violated?
