CUTM 4012: Methods of Teaching English
Presentation transcript:

We are going to speak about: - Classroom internet activities - Kinds of internet activities - Reading - Writing - Listening - Speaking

 The Internet offers a world of possibilities in teaching any grade level. Virtual field trips and interactive activities can engage students’ imaginations and allow them to experience concepts in ways that would not be possible through traditional lessons. Internet exercises are not only a good way to teach the regular curriculum, they provide an excellent opportunity to teach students about online safety and Internet research methods. The following resources can help teachers integrate the web technology into their classrooms.

Keeping students interested and engaged in the current topic or activity is a daily challenge for teachers in the Internet classroom. One of the advantages of the Internet is that it provides new possibilities for assisting teachers to successfully meet this challenge

Follow that story!  Here’s another reading activity. Find a large news site in English and choose four to five news stories that you think “have legs” (that is, they will keep going for at least a week, e.g. the world cup would have been a good one in July). Give the list of news stories to the students, and provide them with the URLs to several news sites in English. They must “follow” their news story for a week, reading or watching items relating to it in English from a variety of news sites. At the end of the week, they summaries their findings into a report and post it on the course site (or it to you).

How to get to my house  Prepare a (simple) map of a town. Name some of the buildings, and make sure you've got a railway station.  Make as many copies as the number of students in your group.  Mark a different building on each map.  Assign each pupil a partner to whom he/she will be writing. Tell them that their task is to write a letter to their penfriend explaining the way to their home from the railway station. (The marked building on their maps is their house.)  When the letters are finished, the students 'send' them to their penfriends, who try to find the building on the map based on the description they got.  Ask them to compare their maps for checking.

What’s my line? This listening activity works as a homework activity or even in a face to face class if you have a connection to the internet. First, choose a series of movie trailers for movies that are out or coming out now. Four to six should do. Watch each trailer and make a note of two phrases you hear in the trailer. Then add a “distractor”, a phrase that isn’t in the trailer but that could be. Give the students the title of the trailer and the three phrases. They have to watch the trailer and identify the distractor. This activity is always very popular, and learners can make their own “What’s my line” activities for a partner afterwards.

Students can go in groups of 2-6. They have to choose a problem such as global warming, eating junk food, human rights in North Korea, etc. and make a poster about it. Then, they have to do a presentation about their poster.. Each student in the group has to talk for 3-5 minutes.
