5. The Secret Bargain Ali’s wife took the short cut over the fields to her cousin’s house. Panting heavily, she arrived at her cousin’s house and rapped on the door. She told him the story of the bramble bush and the hidden treasure. “If I tell you where the treasure is, will you share it with me half-and-half?” she asked. When her cousin agreed to the bargain, she told him to look for the bramble bush with a torn rag on it. That is where the treasure would be hidden. She then ran silently home and slipped into bed. Immediately, the cousin picked up his spade and made his way silently through the night. The stillness was disturbed only by the barking of a dog in the distance. It did not take him long to find the bramble bush with the rag on it. He quickly began to dig. “I’ll keep all the treasure to myself,” he chuckled as he dug. “My wife’s cousin will not be able to complain to her silly husband.” (c) Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council 2009/SEMA/elearning HT_Assessment 5
