Defining the Strike Zone: Solutions to Distance Education Challenges Defining the Strike Zone: Solutions to Distance Education Challenges Thursday, October 31, 2013 CCCCIO 2013 Fall Conference 1:45- 3:30

Panelist  Patricia James, Dean of Library and Technology Menifee Campus of Mt. San Jacinto College  John Makevich, Director of Distance and Accelerated Learning College of the Canyons  Fabiola Torres, Professor Ethnic Studies and Distance Education Coordinator Glendale Community College

Purpose The Governor’s focus is turning to Distance Education as a solution to access and completion problems in our colleges. What obstacles have we encountered and what others are looming in our future! From Accreditation to Unions to Student Success, this panel will discuss what steps they’ve taken at their institutions and share lessons learned and the lessons we may have yet to learn.

Questions  What is your Distance Education structure and how do you interface with your Academic Senate?  What has been the most difficult path you have taken to ensure quality distance education and conversely what has been the easiest implementation?  What quality control mechanisms have you implemented?

More questions…..  What were the most effective strategies you used to include training for distance education in you collective bargaining agreement?  How do we align ACCJC expectations to instructional design?  How do we maintain and support learner-centered design both instructionally and institutionally?  Will community colleges become Credit by Exam Centers?

Finally,  How can MOOCS leverage community colleges or will they?  How can community colleges leverage MOOCS  How do we maintain excitement in DE courses? …Do we need to do this?
