Content ‘Impacts of Weather and Climate on Human Health - A UN Response’… A little bit of background What has been done? Why it was done (aims and objectives) What are the challenges? The future…. Introduction

Background Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) was a decision of the World Climate Conference in Geneva A UN-led initiative spearheaded by WMO to guide the development and application of science-based climate information and services in support of decision-making in climate sensitive sectors. The focus areas initially were food security, water, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and human health GFCS

What has been done… (and why) Establish a joint project office across WHO and WMO… Aspects of this office: Remit/governance Size Where, Who’s involved…etc. Why it was done (aims and objectives) WMO has well established programmes for water, agriculture and DRR…. but not health Weak links between the research and operations communities of weather/climate and health Why it was done (aims and objectives) WMO has well established programmes for water, agriculture and DRR…. but not health Weak links between the research and operations communities of weather/climate and health Joint Office

Future: Funding to develop the programme New theme for the GFCS – Energy Future: Funding to develop the programme New theme for the GFCS – Energy Challenges and the future… Challenges: Explaining the ‘service’ approach Size of the task Prioritising the work including geographic areas, who to engage etc Joint Office
