In 1869, a Scientist named Dimitry Mendeleyev constructed the first periodic table. He organized the elements according to their families, atomic numbers and many other properties. Today, the periodic table shows 112 elements. Elements are pure substances made of only one kind of atom. Atoms are tiny structures found in all matter. Most substances contain many different atoms. Only elements contain only one kind of atom. ELEMENTS:One kind of atom and pure COMPOUNDS:Two or more kinds of atoms chemically bonded. MIXTURES: Two or more elements or compounds physically together and it is not pure. We will study the periodic table and make one wall-size periodic table showing at least one use for each element. 1.We will be studying 84 elements on the periodic table. There will be seven groups you are assigned to; four to a group. 2.Each individual is responsible for making three 5x7 note cards on the elements provided you have 50 mintues. 3.Your periodic table should contain element name, symbol, atomic number, and whole host of scientific data. 4.You will need a black marker and may use any color to represent your elements. Include one place you can find your element in. 5.Review the Periodic Element lecture online, take notes. Then present to class. 6.Afterwards take the group quiz online. 7.Evaluate your group work. Get into your the cooperative groups and assign group leaders. Leader: Student passes out the cards and checks that directions are being understood. Materials manager: student brings all materials to your group. Communicator: This student will collect completed note cards and return them to the teacher as well as ask any questions. Computer Expert: This student will lead the group in completing the online lesson and quiz. Search for elements in text books or online for the necessary information and write it done on the 5x7 note cards. Present individual cards to class. Notes: There are no atomic numbers on original periodic table, only atomic weights and the groupings of elements based on their known properties. 30 years later J. J. Thomson suggested that the electronic configuration of atoms might account for the periodicity of the elements, 40 years would pass before atomic numbers were recognized as the basis for ordering the elements.
