EMBEDDING QUOTES EASIER THAN IT SOUNDS!

SO, WHAT DOES “EMBED” MEAN, ANYWAY? MERRIAM-WEBSTER’S DICTIONARY SAYS IT’S, “TO MAKE SOMETHING AN INTEGRAL PART OF.” TO MAKE THAT A LITTLE CLEARER, IT MEANS TO TAKE SOMETHING (IN THIS CASE, A QUOTATION), AND MAKE IT PART OF SOMETHING ELSE. THINK ABOUT CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES. THE CHOCOLATE CHIPS ARE EMBEDDED IN THE COOKIES. IT WOULD BE WEIRD TO EAT THEM SEPARATELY FROM THE COOKIES.

LET’S LOOK AT A COUPLE OF EXAMPLES BENEATHA IS A CHARACTER WHO BELIEVES IN FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION. SHE SAID THIS QUOTE: “PEOPLE HAVE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. IS THIS A GOOD EXAMPLE? WHY OR WHY NOT? HOW MIGHT WE MAKE IT BETTER? BENEATHA IS A CHARACTER WHO BELIEVES THAT, “PEOPLE NEED TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.”

ANOTHER EXAMPLE! RON GATHERED HIS COURAGE WHEN HE SAW THE MOUNTAIN TROLL. HE SHOUTED, “WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA!” IS THIS ANY BETTER? WHY NOT? HOW ABOUT THIS ONE? WHEN HE FACED THE TWELVE-FOOT MOUNTAIN TROLL, RON GATHERED HIS COURAGE AND SHOUTED, “WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA!”

LET’S LOOK AT OUR QUOTES FROM YESTERDAY. ANSWER: “SCHOOL IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE LIFE IS DIFFICULT WITHOUT AN EDUCATION. QUOTATION: “THERE ARE MANY CAREER FIELDS THAT WILL NOT EVEN CONSIDER AN APPLICANT IF THEY DO NOT HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA.” HOW CAN WE TAKE THE CHOCOLATE CHIPS (THE QUOTATION) AND EMBED THEM IN THE COOKIE DOUGH (A SENTENCE OF OUR OWN)?

A PERSON CAN MAKE A NEW FRIEND BY INTRODUCING THEMSELVES AND BEING FRIENDLY. “WHEN ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A NEW FRIEND, ONE MUST BE FRIENDLY TO OTHERS.” HOW CAN WE TURN THIS INTO AN EMBEDDED QUOTE?

YOUR TURN! ENGLISH CLASS IS USEFUL IN THAT IT HELPS A PERSON SPEAK AND WRITE BETTER. “SPEAKING AND WRITING CLEARLY CAN BE A HUGE ADVANTAGE WHEN APPLYING FOR ADVANCED POSITIONS.” ON YOUR OWN PAPER, TRY TO EMBED THE QUOTE INTO A SENTENCE THAT SUPPORTS THAT ANSWER.

YOU’VE GOT THIS! NOW, TAKE THE FIRST OF YOUR TWO QUOTES FROM THE ARTICLE AND EMBED THEM INTO A SENTENCE THAT SUPPORTS YOUR ANSWER TO THE QUESTION. AFTER I LOOK AT IT, TRY DOING THE SAME THING TO YOUR SECOND QUOTE.
