Introduction to Management Course Basics
Kaplan Classes Each course is broken down into 10 parts, called Units. Each course is 10 weeks in duration; there is a Unit for each week. Units run from Wednesday through midnight on the following Tuesday. Your task is to complete the assignments within each Unit during the Wednesday—Tuesday midnight timeframe. Don’t confuse your seminar time (also called class time) with the Wednesday through Tuesday Unit schedule.

Late Policy These classes go by quickly! Make arrangements in advance! Late work will receive a penalty –1-7 days (one week)=20% deduction –8-14 days (two weeks)=30% deduction –> 14 days=will not be accepted. –IMPORTANT: No assignments can be submitted after the last day of class! –Computer issues and connectivity issues are not considered extenuating circumstances!
Netiquette Be respectful! Agree to disagree! Keep disagreements to the subject-do not include personal attacks! Be scholarly and professional at all times! DO NOT USE ALL CAPS! Do nt use txt or chat shrt cuts! Reread your messages to make sure that they say what you want them to say. If you are upset, walk away for a few minutes.

Respond to the Discussion Question(s) Each week will have one (or more) Discussion Question –You need to provide an initial response answering each Discussion Question –Post early: Your Initial Post must be made no later than Saturday –Must be at least 100 words. Weekly Activity: Participation Participate in the class discussion for each Discussion Question –Respond to at least two classmates per Discussion Question –Posts need to cover at least three days for each Discussion Question. For all posts –Be thoughtful, thorough, and substantive. The posts should address the Discussion questions or topics. –Substantial posts are a paragraph of five to seven sentences! –Spell Check your posts ! Weekly Activity: Assignments! Exercises may consist of answering questions or writing a paper. Proof, proof, proof – grammar and spelling matter. Apply the concepts and language of the course Answer all the questions in terms of the key concepts of that unit Additional research may be used. Assignments are due by Tuesday Midnight EST.
Submitting Assignments To submit assignments, click on the Dropbox tab. Select “Submit an Assignment” and then choose the correct “Submit to Basket.” Only documents in Microsoft Word will be accepted! Do not type assignments into the comments section! Word Perfect documents will not be accepted. –Document must end with.doc,.docx, or.rtf –When saving your assignment, include your name in the file name. –username_homework_unit1.doc Your username is the name you type in when logging in. Unit 1 Assignment For this assignment, you must read and review the Course Syllabus located in the DocSharing area.DocSharing Once you have read and reviewed the Course Syllabus, download the Unit 1 Syllabus Acknowledgement from the Assignment Page. Type your name and the date into this document and then save it using the naming conventions described in the Unit 1 Assignment Link When you're ready, submit the saved document through the Dropbox. Post to the Unit 1 Dropbox as an attachment. Do not submit the actual syllabus! Be sure that it is the Syllabus Acknowledgement!

What Managers Do: POLC P = Planning: The management function of systematically making decisions about goals and activities that an individual, a group, a work unit, or the overall organization will pursue. O = Organizing: The management function of assembling and coordinating human, financial, informational, and other resources needed to achieve goals. L = Leading: The management function that involves the manager’s efforts to stimulate high performance by employees C = Control: The management function of monitoring performance and making needed changes.
What is Business ? A commercial entity that engages in activities to earn a profit.
What is Profit? The positive gain from an investment or business operation after subtracting for all expenses. Revenue-Expenses=Profit
What is Revenue? For a company, this is the total amount of money received by the company for goods sold or services provided during a certain time period. What are Expenses? Any cost of doing business resulting from revenue-generating activities.
