Why are countries cooperating? Interdependence Globalisation Common solutions to common problems: economy, environment, etc
Economic cooperation in the EU Single Market - €5,700 (£3,819) of extra income per household over 10 years 60 million customs forms scrapped Delivery costs reduced by 15 per cent Between 300,000 and 900,000 jobs created
Environment cooperation Birds Directive protects migrating birds REACH programme to test chemicals Emissions trading scheme
Why does it work? Based on institutions: –European Commission - represents the common European interest –European Parliament - directly elected –Council of Ministers - represents national governments Decisions have the force of law Steps towards more democracy
Should we stay or should we go? Globalisation exists Countries have to cooperate to deal with globalisation We need law to regulate globalisation We need democracy to make those laws Europe is the best place to start
If not the European Union, what else?
