The History… the history of tattoo began over 5000 years ago and is as diverse as the people who wear them.

History of Tattoos No one can really say when the history of tattoos began. The oldest known tattoo was discovered in 1991. It was found on a mummy known as Oetzi, an iceman found on the Italian & Austrian Alps dated to be a least 5,300 years old. The most common idea is that tattoos were done for medicinal purposes, social status, ritual markings or just simple preference.

History of Tattoos Tattooing in the Western world today has its origins in Polynesia, with the discovery of Tattau by eighteenth century explorers, which became popular among European sailors. People have also been forcibly tattooed, or accidently tattooed. A well known example was the identification of inmates of the Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. Christian children having crosses tattooed by their parents for protection against forced conversion to other religions or coal miners having dust introduced into a wound that would develop into a permanent mark.

United States History of Tattoos In 1769 Captain James Cook traveled to Tahiti to observe skin marking customs to the natives. A German immigrant Martin Hilderbrandt got the honor of the first professional tattooist in the United States; he tattooed soldiers on both sides of the Civil War. In 1891 the first patented electric tattoo machine was issued to a Irish tattooist Samuel O’Reilly.

United States History of Tattoos It is estimated that by the end of the 19th century 90% of American sailors had tattoos. The most popular tattoo in the military has sentimental roots; a heart tattoo with a ribbon inscribed with MOM.

How Tattoos are Made First we have to take a quick look at human anatomy. Our skin is made up of two layers : the epidermis and the dermis: the epidermis is the outer layer while the dermis is the deeper layer. When a tattoo is applied, the ink is injected into the dermis becoming permanent; otherwise shedding occurs causing the tattoo to only be temporary. The method of tattooing has not changed much since its beginning, ancient tattooist were believed to use sharp pieces of bones, while today, needles can produce up to 30,000 punctures per minute.

How Tattoos are Made

How Tattoos are Made The tattoo machine consists of three main parts. The base , the mechanism, and the sanitary tube that holds the needles. ALL tattoo artists must use single use needles. When the design & color choices are made, the artist selects the proper size of needle and a decided location of the tattoo, then the tattoo is administered by puncturing the skin. The time frame depends on the intricacy and size of the design.

Problems Associated with Tattoos When getting a tattoo there are a few risks factors and problems associated with the procedure. The biggest risk is acquiring a communicable disease i.e.: Hepatitis, Tetanus, Staph and other blood borne diseases, as acquiring a tattoo involves some degree of bleeding. Another risk is infection. The most important way to reduce these risks is by having your tattoo performed by a licensed artist in a licensed facility. Regardless of one’s opinion the fact is, that having tattoos can sometimes be detrimental to a persons success in the business
