Definitions of History and Fiction History- True events that happened in the past. Fiction- A genre of literature in which the events that take place are made up.

What is Historical Fiction? A sub-genre of fiction that often portrays fictional accounts or dramatization of historical figures or events. Writers attempt to capture the spirit, manners and social conditions of the persons or time(s) presented in the story.

We didn’t find a lot of similarities between history and fiction but the one that we did find is that they both try and tell a story. Similarities between history and fiction

Differences between history and fiction Although they both tell a story, history is based off true events while fiction is made up events. In Cion, Mda writes about a slave plantation which we all know existed however this particular plantation is fictional. The concept of slave breeding plantations is fictional.

How its used in the novel Nicodeums was a real slave who escaped from his plantation. He escaped on the Underground Railroad and was killed in the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority house here at Ohio University. His ghost is said to haunt the house (like it does in the novel) Even though he was a real person, the story used in the novel is fictional. The story told is meant to entertain the readers as well as provide them with a little bit of history.

…How it is used in the novel The quilts Abyssinian Queen and Ruth make in the novel are not real but based off real quilts

What is the purpose? To keep the reader/viewer interested while teaching them about past events. Although these events may not all be true, they still relate to something that has happened in the past.

Examples ? Can you think of any examples of Historical Fiction?

Examples: The show Band of Brothers and the movie Titanic – Since the show, the interest of World War II sky rocked – How many people would have been interested in the sinking of the Titanic before the movie came out? – This just proves that mixing history with fiction allows the story to be more interesting, while also learning about the past. Pride and Prejudice Band of Brothers –
