The American Revolution The Events that led up to the American Revolution By: Renata Barragan 5th Grade

The French and Indian War Britain helped the colonists in defeating the French in the French and Indian War. The cost of the war caused Britain to change its policy and impose a tax on colonists to help cover the cost.

Parliament decided colonists should pay for part of the French and Indian War. Taxes charged on all paper goods. Colonists were angered by this. Taxation without representation The Stamp Act

The Boston Tea Party Parliament passes another new law which allowed a British company to sell tea at a lower price. The colonists boycott the British tea. Colonists wouldn’t allow British ships into harbor but ship captains refused to be turned away. Colonists dress as Indians and board ships and dump all tea into harbor.

The First Continental Congress Representatives of 12 colonies held a Continental Congress in Philadelphia to respond to British controls in Massachusetts. Congress members voted to stop trade with Britain, disobey laws that restricted their liberty and pursue only “peaceable measures”

Battle of Lexington and Concord In April 1775, British troops were sent to Lexington and Concord to find weapons stored by the colonists. Minutement were ready due to the warning by Paul Revere and William Dawes. The shots fired at Lexington and Concord marked the beginning of the bitter, long war between the British and the American colonies known as the American Revolution.

The Second Continental Congress The Second Continental Congress meets in Philadelphia in The Patriots send the Olive Branch Petition to the king and form a colonial army. These actions helped create the interdependence of the colonists as Americans.

Declaration of Independence Patriot leaders form a committee to draw up a declaration of independence. Thomas Jefferson explains why change was needed, and colonies need to be free and independent. Thomas Jefferson wrote most of the document, which was approved on July 4, american_revolution.jpg

Treaty of Paris An agreement was reached to end the conflict between the colonists and British. This was highly influenced by Benjamin Franklin and Richard Oswald. The boundaries of the new United States were set in the resulting of the “Treaty of Paris.”
