Hanus USDA-Forest Service, Siuslaw National Forest, Corvallis, OR NW Alliance for Computational Science & Engineering (NACSE), & the Oregon Coalition of Interdisciplinary Databases, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR Web-based access to lichen monitoring data: The USDA Forest Service experience.

The USFS lichens and air quality database is now "on-line". Query: 1650 sites and 41,262 lichen records from Oregon, Washington and southeastern Alaska Obtain: species lists/distribution maps habitat and location data tissue concentrations of 27 elements from 12 lichen and 2 moss species deposition estimates for sulfur and nitrogen air pollution scores from lichen community data

National Forests of western Washington and Oregon, including the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Sampling Intensity Lichen data collected from the permanently marked, 3.4 mile USFS regional Current Vegetation Survey grid. 1/4 of the grid points are monitored each year for 4 years. Repeat every 10 years. Monitoring Area

Distribution of Monitoring Sites

At each Monitoring Site : A 2 hour survey is made of epiphytic macrolichens, following FHM methods. 2 lichen and/or moss species are collected for tissue analysis of S,N, and other elements.

Distribution of Hypogymnia oceanica over a base map of precipitation

Distribution of Lobaria oregana over a base map of annual precipitation

Distribution of Lobaria oregana over a base map of average temperature during the growing season (November – May)

Distribution map of Lobaria oregana over a base map of S deposition

Distribution of Xanthoria polycarpa over a map indicating land ownership and topography
