Moral principles of right and wrong Used by individuals/organisations To guide behaviour

Ethical principles:  Treat others as you want to be treated  If action not right for everyone, not right for anyone  If action not repeatable, not right at any time  Put value on outcomes, understand consequences  Incur least harm or cost

 Codes of practice/conduct eg on use of , use of internet ◦ Employees need guidance on how they are allowed to use and store information.  ‘Whistle blowing’ policy ◦ Employees need to know they are safe and can communicate any work issues with confidence.  Organisational policies ◦ Organisations must be able to implement working practices so employees know what is expected of them.  Information ownership ◦ Organisation must keep their data safe and secure so employees and customers will have faith in the company

 RESPONSIBILITY: Accepting costs, duties, obligations for decisions  ACCOUNTABILITY: Assessing responsibilities for decisions & actions  LIABILITY: Must pay for legal damages  DUE PROCESS: Insures laws are applied properly

 “Codes of practice’ exist separate from any legal requirements with which professionals within the industry are expected to comply.  They help maintain professional standards of behaviour within the industry.  An organisation will have many codes of practice to guide their employees in how to behave and use the systems securely and respectfully.

 A code of conduct will also specify what happens if an employee breaches the rules. It will give details of the disciplinary procedures that will be followed and the penalties that could be expected. Penalties might be:  (a) Verbal warning from supervisor.  (b) Written warning.  (c) Loss of pay or privileges.  (d) Dismissal.  Refer to the college codes of practice for ICT on your intranet eg use of , use of internet

 Whistle blowing is when an employee provides information, about dangerous, unethical or illegal practice, to the employer which has come to their attention through work.  Employees must provide a way for this information to be given confidentially to protect their identity.  Each employee must be made aware of what eh whistle blowing policy is and where they can access it in order for them to follow the guidance if needed.

 A Procedure/Practice is a clear step by step method for implementing an organisation’s policy or responsibility.  Procedures describe a logical sequence of activities or processes that are to be followed to complete a task or function in a correct and consistent manner

 Employees working in an organisation can have a framework for actions that help them get on with the job they need to do.  Employees in the organisation don’t have to keep on discussing and re-discussing the same issues every time they arise –  Legal and other requirements can be met  As a tool in quality improvement  Examples of polices: Work Life Balance, Health and Safety, Disability and Equality, Discipline, Maternity, Harassment, Sickness Absence....

 Taking responsibility for the storage and use of data  Adhering to the Data Protection Act to ensure that information is stored and used in line with the 8 principles.  Producing the Information Ownership Policy.  Who in the company is responsible eg data controller.  How data is communicated – restricting how and who can pass on and use the data.  Controlling restrictive access to information at different levels and uses internal and external to the company
