Value Study In the context of drawing…what is value?

Values Values can be described as the range of grays between white and black that are used to describe form in drawing. When representing form, an artist sees many values starting with a gray so light you can barely tell it is not white through to grays so dark you might think they are black at first glance. If you saw a value scale, it would look like a very gradual gradation of grays, something like this:

Value Scale For the purposes of this study we will be looking at the value scale as distinct steps of gray from white to black

Value Studies The following studies are examples of how a value can appear different depending on what value it is next to or surrounded by.

Get your answer signs ready… Each slide will show you two background values with a small square in the center of each. Compare the value of the two small squares and determine if they are the same value or different. For example…

I bet you were thinking… …some of them were easy to see and others were harder and what does this have to do with drawing anyway?

Awareness of value Understanding where to place the light and dark values in a drawing will make it appear three dimensional but sometimes its hard to determine what values goes where.

As artists… …we sharpen our observation by constantly comparing the values in the light with the values in the dark, when drawing a form. As you could see from the study, sometimes it is difficult to determine the value you are seeing depending on what it is surrounded by, which is called field effect.

Can you see any of the values from the value scale in this still life ?

Are you seeing that awareness of these values will help with accurate representation? Look again…notice how many different values are present? What areas are in the light? What areas are dark? Can you see varying values in both areas?
