M ITOSIS process where the nucleus in the cell forms two identical nuclei in the original cell process by which nuclear material is divided during cell division

P ROPHASE packing of chromatin into short and thick chromosomes nuclear membrane and nucleoli disappear centrioles split and migrate to poles (only in animal cells) spindle fibers attach to centromere of each chromosome

M ETAPHASE spindle fibers pull double stranded chromosomes to the middle of the cell

A NAPHASE centromeres pull apart when spindle fibers contract and shorten single stranded chromosomes move away from middle towards opposite poles
