ACE 2 Review What does the term "philosophical position" mean? A view about the world based on personal beliefs. What beliefs are common in Puritan philosophy?

Nathaniel Hawthorne Born in Salem, Massachusetts Puritan Background Descendent of John Hathorne – one of the three judges in the Salem Witch Trials Disappointed in humanity – believed people were evil.

What is Hawthorne’s "philosophical position" about people’s nature? All people are evil, they do not take responsibility for their actions, they accuse others to make themselves feel better. His own ancestor sentenced innocent people to die. People are NATURALLY EVIL and cannot resist it. What does the following quote mean? "...and after this one night I'll cling to her skirts and follow her to heaven."

What does it mean when a question uses the term EXCEPT? All of the following are positive reasons to travel to Italy EXCEPT A. Excellent food B. Beautiful scenery C. Rich in history and culture D. Italy is also called Italia

Read the following quote and identify at least two meanings intended by the author. "Faith kept me back a while."

What does it mean to be a "gamer"? What does a “gamer” do? What is a “moral”? What does the term "moral character" mean?

Tips: Several of the questions require a close reading of the text. You MUST go back to the text and make sure it supports the choices you make. For example: Empathy is clearly defined in the article

First Constructed Response Prompt: How does Hawthorne use the setting to communicate Young Goodman Brown's evil intentions? Cite and explain evidence to prove that the setting foreshadows Young Goodman Brown's actions. What exactly is this prompt requiring? What must you do to earn 4/4?

Read the following passage and try to identify the clue words that reveal the narrator's view of the setting. “Before us is the Salesman’s house. We are aware of towering, angular shapes behind it, surrounding it on all sides. Only the blue light of the sky falls upon the house and forestage; the surrounding area shows an angry glow of orange.”

The narrator does not have a positive view of the setting. The word “towering” and the phrase “surrounding it on all sides” makes it seem as if the Salesman’s house is trapped in the middle of all of the new buildings. The “angry glow of orange” contrasts the “blue light” that only shines on the house. The house is a place of importance and comfort to the Salesman. The “angry glow” that shines on the surrounding area is a clue to the audience. The Salesman does not like the tall buildings that surround his house. He feels closed in.

Second Constructed Response Prompt: How does the image in the passage convey the concept of the blurring of lines between good vs. evil? What exactly is this prompt requiring? What must you do to earn 2/2?
