Warm up:- How are children kept safe in the setting?

What is safeguarding? The Government has defined the term ‘safeguarding children’ as: ‘The process of protecting children from abuse or neglect, preventing impairment of their health and development, and ensuring they are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care that enables children to have optimum life chances and enter adulthood successfully.’ www.safeguardingchildren.org.uk

Safeguarding Emphasis on promoting health and well being in general terms as well as protection from abuse. - Safe from harm - Safe from illness - Safe from abuse or injury. Children are protected by law up until the age of 19yrs.

Every Child Matters Every Child Matters is the government agenda which focuses on bringing together services to support children and families. It sets out five major outcomes for children: Be healthy Stay safe Enjoy and achieve (learning and development) Make a positive contribution (positive behaviour) Achieve economic well-being

What to do Listen carefully Remain calm Give them your attention Believe what they are saying and take it seriously Make a report of the conversation Report to the designated safeguarding officer

Bullying Emotional – tormenting, ridicule, humiliation. Cyber bullying – mobile phones, internet. Physical – pushing, kicking, hitting. Verbal – name calling, insults, sarcasm,spreading rumours.

The UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) brings together organisations from industry; children’s charities; and government, to work together on making the internet safer for children. Members include Microsoft, BT, Yahoo, CEOP and the NSPCC.

‘Click Clever, Click Safe Code’. Flag it:- If you see anything that upsets you online or if someone asks to meet you, flag it up with someone you trust. Zip it:- When you’re online, always keep your personal stuff private and think about what you say and do. Block it:- Block people who send you nasty messages and don’t open unknown links and attachments.
