HSBC BUSINESS CASE COMPETITION PLAN FOR LOCAL COMPETITION - VIETNAM Prepared by: Thu Tran Corporate Sustainability, HSBC; Melvin Fernando Senior Lecturer, RMIT Date: 21 Jan 2016

Background HSBC focuses on helping young people reach their potential, regardless of their background. Specifically, we invest in access to education, life skills and entrepreneurship, and discovering cultures and the natural world. For the past 6 years, with support from HSBC and other sponsors, The Asia Case Research Center (ACRC) in Hongkong has been organizing the only undergraduate business case competition that brings together top universities from all over Asia. Undergraduate students compete against each other in teams of 4 in business case analysis and presentation. For the winning teams, prize money is awarded to the championship team, the first runner-up and the second runner-up.

Competition history 2008 – 2009 competitions (HSBC/McKinsey Business Case Competition) The only undergraduate business case competition participated by all universities in Hong Kong. 2010 – 2012 competitions (HSBC/McKinsey Business Case Competition) - Top talent from Hong Kong universities were joined by their peers from Mainland China, India, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. - 40 senior business executives including 24 from HSBC judged at the event in 2012. Other senior business executives included those from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Towngas, Norton Rose Fulbright, Jardine Matheson, MF Jebsen Group, Tai Sang Land Development, Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks and Luen Thai Holdings. 2013 competition to present (HSBC Asia Pacific Business Case Competition) - HSBC became the sole sponsor for the competition starting in 2013. - Top teams from Hong Kong universities competed against teams from Mainland China, Macau, India, Indonesia, Brunei, Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines.

Regional competition format The competition consists of four rounds, two on day one of the competition and another two rounds on day two. For each round the students will be given an unpublished business case developed by the Asia Case Research Centre. Teams are separated in breakout rooms and are given 2.5 hours to come up with a solution to the case and prepare a presentation of said solution. The solution will be presented to a panel of 3 senior executives from Hong Kong’s international business community. Each presentation lasts 25 minutes followed by a Q&A session. All team members should be present.
