What is digital art? Any artwork that uses some kind of computer technology (includes digital cameras, camcorders, etc)

Pixel (definition) Unit of measurement, a single point in an image In a picture, each pixel is assigned a color Each one of these squares is a pixel

A pixel is the smallest piece of information in a digital image A pixel is the smallest piece of information in a digital image. Each pixel contains a small bit of color, and together, pixels make up a complete image. If you zoom in enough on a digital image, you can begin to see the individual pixels. The more pixels, the better the image looks. 1 pixel 4 pixels 25 pixels 100 pix 400px 2500px 10000px

Digital image sizes are measured in 3 ways: Print size (inches) Resolution (#pixels x #pixels or ppi) File size (Bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB) 4.5 inches x 3.5 inches 450 x 338 pixels 61 KB

Resolution The number of pixels (or dots) in an image The higher the number, the sharper the image 300 ppi 25 ppi

When you are looking for images on the internet, look for images with high resolution, or high file sizes. Otherwise, when you blow them up, the images will pixilate (get fuzzy)

DPI (dots per inch) How many “dots” in a one by one inch square Usually refers to the resolution of a printing device (dots = drops of ink) A measurement of image resolution

PPI (pixels per inch) How many pixels are in a one inch by one inch square Usually refers to the resolution of an image displayed digitally (like on a computer monitor) A measurement of image resolution

CMYK Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black Colors used when printing an image CMYK make up millions of colors when combined in different amounts.

RGB Red, Green, and Blue These are the colors of the tiny lights in your computer monitors. RGB combine to make millions of colors when used in different amounts RGB mode in Photoshop is used when making images for electronic displays (web pages, etc.)

File Extension myresume.doc The last three letters in a file name Tells you what program will open the document .doc = Microsoft Word .pdf = Adobe Acrobat myresume.doc File name File extension

A note about naming files NEVER use punctuation marks or capitol letters when naming a file Spaces are ok, so is the _ underscore mark OK! my_resume.doc OK! my-resume.doc

Your file will become corrupted …and you’ll lose all of your work! Corrupted! myresume :).doc myresume/good.doc my.resume!.doc Corrupted! Corrupted!

.jpg or .jpeg Type of image file Compresses the data, some of which is lost every time you save it. That’s why its called a “lossy” file type

.tiff An image file type in which no data is lost. Because there is no loss of data, the file sizes can be big. A tiff file saved on a PC wont open on a Mac, so its platform dependant

.bmp A type of image file Not great for high resolution images

.psd A Photoshop document. .psd files can only be opened in Photoshop. .bmp, tiff, jpeg files can be opened with almost any program

.png Add this to your notes Type of image file Can set transparency

Raster Image The image is made up of pixels. The sharper the image, the more pixels it has. Good for photo-realistic images Raster images can not be enlarged without becoming pixelated

Vector Images Images defined by paths (it’s a math thing) Vector images can be enlarged infinitely without losing clarity of the image Good for graphic designs, logos, text Vector images never look “photorealistic”
