Adams-Onis Treaty Land Disputes Between Spanish and U.S.

What was happening in the U.S during this time? The U.S. declared it’s independence from Britain by signing the Declaration of Independence The U.S. purchased the Louisiana Territory, called the “Louisiana Purchase”, from France (in present day Mid-West U.S.) for $15 million. It doubled the size of the U.S. at the time. Many U.S. citizens moved into the new land… causing land disputes between the Spanish and U.S. Rather than fighting a war over the territory, both declared that the lands would be the Neutral ground.

What problems did the Neutral Ground cause? Smugglers, outlaws and fugitives from both Spanish and American territories moved into the neutral ground. Why? They were safe from legal authority since nobody owned it.

How did they settle the disputes? John Quincy Adams (President of the U.S. at the time) and Luis de Onis (Spanish minister to the U.S.) signed the ADAMS-ONIS TREATY in 1819, which settled all disputes The Adams-Onis Treaty: Spain gave its colony of Florida to the U.S. Agreed that the Sabine River as the eastern boundary of Texas. U.S. surrendered all claim to Texas Neutral ground became U.S. territory Spain gained TX, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada & Cali

CausesEffect Spain and the U.S. sign the Adams- Onis Treaty in 1819 Criminals were hiding in the neutral ground Boundary disputes between Spain and the U.S. U.S. Purchased Louisiana “Louisiana Purchase” Neutral Ground becomes U.S. Territory U.S. surrenders all claims to Texas Spain gave Florida to the U.S. & also agreed that the Sabine River will become Eastern border of Texas
