Definitions Algebra= A type of mathematics where letters are used in place of numbers. Integers= The set of all numbers both positive and negative. Operations= Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division.

Addition Rules Positive + Positive = Positive ( 6 + 4 = 10) Negative + Negative = Negative (-5 + -3 = -8) 3. Different Signs = You must subtract (10 + -3 = +7)

Subtraction Rules Second number gets changed to its opposite, then you add (follow the addition rules) -12 – 10 -12 + -10 = -22

Multiplication Rules 1. Same Signs = Positive (5 x 4 = 20) 2. Different Signs = Negative (-4 x 3 = -12) (5 x -2 = -10)

Division Rules 1. Same Signs = Positive (20 / 4 = 5) (-18 / -3 = 6) 2. Different Signs = Negative (-8 / 2 = -4) (12 / -2 = -6)

Answer the Following 1. 12 + 8 = ? 2. -15 + -13 = ? 3. 8 – 12 = ? 4. 6 x -5 = ? 5. -10 / -5 = ?

Remember… It is vital to know all the rules regarding operations on integers. It is the foundation upon which the study of Algebra is based and it must be mastered Good Luck!
