Factors that Affect Tourism An critical look at what has affected Travel changes in the past and currently Ms. Maharaj CGG3O

What do you think influences Travel? Who? What ? Why ? Where ? How?

Economic Factors: $$$ Cost can act as travel barrier Economic prosperity (if a person has a lot of money) also influences what kind of vacations and how frequently they might go on vacation When the economy is good, people travel more for business and leisure DISCRETIONARY INCOME: is the money that people have left over after paying taxes and basis living expenses (food, clothing and shelter)

Technological Factors Methods of transportation have changed, aircrafts are faster and more cost efficient

Tech Factors continued… The more high tech the country’s transport system, the more tourists you will find (E.g. New York and France) Why do you think this matters?

Tech factors Continued… The ease of booking trips due to the internet You can book your own trip without the hassle of commissions and travel agents

Political Factors Due to political and civil unrest in nations, tourists do not want to get caught up in the fight, live in fear or put themselves in danger Terrorist acts against tourists in Egypt and Kenya have deterred tourists from visiting at times. Case of Cuba: The US EMBARGO

Embargo in a nutshell Cuba and Soviet Ties Was once allies Cold War (war of words and nuclear arms race Cuba as military base for Soviets Threat to Americans– how? Communist vs. Democracy As punishment– trade, travel, assistance etc Very problematic– people, family ties + politics (Obama)

Politics Continued Islamophobia in a post 9/11 world It is the fear of Islam and all the ideas associated with it Stricter rules, laws and legislation Racial Profiling Intimidation and Fear

Demographic Factors DEMOGRAPHY: characteristics relating to the background of a country’s/place’s population. Baby boom generation retiring; with more time and money to be spent, travel is imminent. Statistics Canada estimated that steadily since 2011, 2.1 million Canadians will travel abroad annually

Cultural Factors The ancient culture of a country can draw people like a magnet As countries are more willing to share their way of life and stories of history, they make the areas more accessible for tourists. Ruins in Turkey

Can you think of any others?
