THE ROARING TWENTIES AND THE GREAT DEPRESSION

OBJECTIVES:  To be able to define and describe the key characteristics of the Roaring Twenties.  To be able to explain the causes and consequences of the Great Depression.

THE ROARING TWENTIES  The Roaring Twenties was a time of great change. The world was settling down in the aftermath of World War I, and many different aspects of culture were rapidly changing.  There are several key characteristics of the Roaring Twenties – your task in this lesson is to identify these.

ACTIVITIES  Google ‘The Roaring Twenties’. Copy 3-5 of the first images and paste them in a word document. What do these images tell you about the Twenties? Write your ideas down – at least 1 per picture.  Click on the link to the McCord Museum Game on the Roaring Twenties:

RESEARCH  Your question is: “What are the key characteristics of the Roaring Twenties?” You have research and write down some notes answering the question. Try to create subtitles for each key characteristic and use bullet points to describe them. You should then discuss your findings with the person next to you:  What characteristics did you identify?  What similarities were there? Differences?

THE GREAT DEPRESSION  The glamour, wealth and cultural explosion of the Roaring Twenties was followed by the Great Depression.

QUICK FACTFILE  Research and produce a factfile on the Great Depression. You should keep a record of your sources in a bibliography.  Questions: What happened? Why did it happen? When did it happen? Who was involved? (This can be people and countries)

THE CONSEQUENCES  The Great Depression led to a period of intense financial hardship for many.  Research the consequences of the Great Depression. Make a list of these using bullet points.
