ENGLISH REQUIREMENTS 4 credits 9 th Graders take: English 9 (Levels 1 or 6) or Honors English 9 Based upon SRI Reading Scores and middle school teacher recommendations we strongly recommend students for Reading with SRI scores consistently below 1,000 (Reading earns elective credit only)

MATHEMATICS REQUIREMENTS 4 credits All students must enroll in a math course each year of high school. -Two credits of Algebra -One credit of Geometry -One additional math credit

SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS Three Credits –Conceptual Physics –Chemistry I –Biology I 9 th grade students should schedule Conceptual Physics Level 8 students who take Honors Conceptual Physics must also schedule Honors Chemistry I

SOCIAL STUDIES REQUIREMENTS Three Credits –Government –U. S. History –World History 9th Graders take: –Basic – U.S. Government (Level 1) –Academic – Government (Level 6) or Honors Government (Level 8) –Honors – Honors Government (Level 8) or AP Government (Level 9)

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH REQUIREMENTS One credit of Physical Education is required for graduation One-half credit of Health I is required for graduation

FINE ARTS REQUIREMENTS One credit of Fine Arts is required for graduation Courses offered to meet the requirement include: Art I Instrumental Music –Band or Orchestra –Electronic Music Drama I and II Chorus I Dance I

FRESHMAN SEMINAR FSK pairs Freshman Seminar (1 credit) with English 9 and the course is taught by an English teacher. Course is leveled by ability (Basic, Academic and Honors). Course provides students with essential competencies and “keys” to be successful in high school Maryland State Department World of Work requirements are completed in this course –Completion of career research –Completion of job applications –Creation of a resume –Creation of an education career plan –Creating a portfolio –Begins preparation for mock interviews (Grade 11)

TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION & FINANCIAL LITERACY REQUIREMENTS Technology Education –1 credit required –Foundations of Technology Financial Literacy –1/2credit required –Financial Literacy or Managing Personal Finance Using Excel meet this requirement These are not 9 th Grade courses

How do you know what level course your child should take? Things to consider –Recommendation of 8 th grade teacher –Assessment Data MSAs –Advanced, Proficient, Basic –MSA scores of Proficient in either Math or Reading equal a 75% correlation to a pass rate on the High School Assessments Proficient scores on MSA should indicate that the student will meet with success in Level 6 courses –Students who are testing as Basic should consider remedial courses such as Reading or in math taking Level 1 Conceptual Algebra SRIs – Indicate Level of Reading Proficiency –Most high school reading materials are at 1,000 Lexile or Higher –Students less than 1,000 will be asked to retest (early summer) or take Reading course

College and Career Readiness Level 6 and Level 8 courses prepare students for upper level course work in the future Honors and AP courses are the BEST preparation for college level work

ADVISORY PROGRAM Each student is assigned to an academic advisor Advisory sessions meet weekly for 35 minutes Program is based upon a county curriculum and state mandates

KEY Time 4 days per week for 35 minutes Students have the time to work with their teachers on remediation or enrichment Can be used to catch up if absent or class was missed for other reasons Students must do academic work during this time

Scheduling Materials Keep Program of Studies for all 4 years Schedule an appointment to come for an Advisory Parent Conference –4:30 pm to 7:30 pm on February 4 th or February 10 th –More information will be forthcoming via Connect 5 about how to or call to set up your conference appointment Conferences will be with your child’s high school advisor and course selections will be finalized at that time
