Energy and Nutrients “You are what you eat!”

Did you know? From 2003 to 2004, approximately 17.4 percent of U.S. teens between the ages of 12 and 19 were overweight. Overweight children and teens are at high risk for developing serious diseases. Type 2 diabetes and heart disease were considered adult diseases, but they are now being reported in children and teens.

Word Web: Complete the word web with the things that give your body energy.

What are Nutrients? Nutrients are the substances in foods that your body needs in order to grow, have energy and stay healthy

Food Guide Pyramid

What are carbohydrates?

What are proteins? Complete: Have all amino acids. Incomplete: Have some amino acids.

What are vitamins?

Vitamins Water-Soluble Vitamins -Dissolve in water and must be replaced each day because the body gets rid of it in urine. Vitamin C and vitamin B Fat-Soluble Vitamins –Dissolve in fat and the body can store these vitamins to use when needed. Vitamin A, D, E, and K

What are fats?

Saturated / Unsaturated / Trans Fat Saturated: all single bonds Unsaturated: has double bonds Trans Fats: hydrogen atoms were chemically added

Why are trans fats not healthy? Trans fat is partially hydrogenated, which makes it have a longer shelf life, extends the shelf live of foods made with it and helps to preserve a food’s flavor. Although your body needs some fats to help break down vitamins and store nutrients, trans fats are not good agents for this process. Trans fats actually raise the bad cholesterol levels in your body and can increase your risk of heart attacks. Even though doughnuts taste delicious, that delicacy can turn out to be deadly.

What are Minerals?

Minerals The body needs minerals. Calcium- strong bones and teeth Iron- strengthening and building the red blood cells Potassium, sodium, and chloride- regulate the water balance in tissue.
