Kirk in the Hills Architecture Project By: Kenzie Mollison

Basic History Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church was founded in Bloomfield Township Michigan by architects George D. Mason, and Wirt Rowland. The masterpiece was supposed to be built before World War 2, but Rowland died in 1946, leaving Mason with only the idea. After years of hard research, and mathematic calculations, Mason used the helpful roof sketches drawn by Rowland when the idea had come up, and built the beautiful castle we all know and love today. Kirk held it’s first services in the Sanctuary on November 23 rd, The church was modeled after the Scottish Melrose Abbey. Set on 40 acres of land, (160,000 m2), of beautiful lakeside grounds, the beauty of the Gothic- Style architecture will forever live on, in it’s home in the beautiful state of Michigan.
