Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.3 Drawings 3  New information and ideas can be communicated and made more clear by illustrating them using photographs and drawings rather then written text.  Many a times, a drawing is the best choice to show details. It can emphasize things that are necessary to show.  For example: A drawing can exactly show the lines between the layers of a rock cut by a canyon.  A drawing can show things we cannot see.  For example: We cannot see the human heart, but drawings show us what it looks like. We can also make quick sketches to help model problems. We could draw the outline of the parts of the heart to show how they work together.

Interesting features such as how an object moves, or how it can be slowed down and sped up can be shown using movies.  For example: To prepare a report on ecology we could use the photographs of the different types of trees in our neighborhood.

It is an organized way to collect and display data for everyone dealing with numbers, and comparing measurements. A variable can be anything that can change or vary such as the temperature of a liquid or the number of people in a race. Both the variables in a line graph must be numbers. One variable should be shown on the horizontal axis, or the X- axis and the other variable should be shown along the vertical axis, or the Y-axis. A line on the graph shows the relationship between the two variables.

It can be numbers, such as the time, or a category. The second variable must be a number. The bars show the size of the second variable. An example of bar graph is given below.

Each piece of a pie visually represents a fraction of the total. By looking at the circle graph, we can quickly see which state had the highest number of students in Grade 6 by comparing the sizes of the pie.

Determine the total of the parts first. In the circle graph shown, the total number of students in Grade 6 is 80. One fraction of the total, Texas, is 30 of 80 students in Grade 6. To determine what fraction of 360 is this, set up a ratio and solve for x : 30/80 = x/360 x = 135 degrees  Texas will have an angle of 135 degrees in the graph. The other angles in the circle are determined in the same way.

Copyright © Ed2Net Learning, Inc.15 Reading graphs 15  While using or making graphs to display data we must be very careful about the scale of the graph as they can be misleading sometimes.  Until you see that the Y-axis does not start at zero, it appears that the number of students has changed in four years. This is called a broken scale and is used to highlight small but significant changes, just as an inset on a map draws attention to a small area of a larger map. Always analyze the measurements and graphs. If there is a surprising result, look closer at the scale.

These tools are used by scientists to collect, organize, summarize, and display data in a way that is easier to understand.  The three common types of graphs are: Line graph, Bar graph and Circle graph.  Line graph shows the relationship between two variables that are numbers on the x and y axis.
