Facts about Our Village Library There is no other village library in the region. Our paraprofessional librarian completed ninth grade. She will be trained by FOKAL. Kreyol is the villagers’ language We have only 7 Kreyol books in our library. There are 250 books in French at the Pre-K to 3 rd grade level. Students begin learning in French in the 1 st grade. The French books in the collection do not follow the curriculum. They are not current. About 1400 outdated or unuseable books have been weeded. There are books in the English language.

Communicating with Dada Dear sara, How are you, your family, and activities! by my side it is ok, the reason I didn't write you is because of the internet was unavailable. I am so sorry, now the internet is available I receive all the messages. thinking with me, and specially for the amazing and interesting christmas card. thinks alot. Dada

Pre-K Classrooms in 21 Schools Train the Teachers Provide 26 Books per Bin PP

Facts on Our Teachers Currently: The teacher is usually the most educated person in the vicinity of the school. Many of our teachers may not have finished high school. Some may not have finished 7 th grade. Few have had teaching coursework. There a no books in the classrooms. There are no reference books, learning aids or materials.

Teachers were thrilled. FIRST BOOKS in HOMES Through our partnership with Star Bright Books, 530 four year olds took their FIRST books home this Christmas.

Priority #3. Follow up on the Training to Learn about Teacher Needs & Outreach to Families St. Josephs School, Thomond

70% of our children drop out before 7 th grade. We are serving 21 schools in a very remote area. 17 of the schools must be reached by burro or hiking. Some schools are 8 hours away from Cange. These schools are similar to Abe Lincoln’s pioneer schools. The annual family wage is $240, less than $1 a day. Staying in school is expensive and an economic decision. The cost of tuition is $40 a child. Uniforms are $20. Workbooks are $15. Facts on Graduating from High School

Pause and Imagine

11 1/3 of Second Grade Students have NO Workbooks.

Help Us Change Cange with Books "When I was a child, my family was too poor to send me to school. We had one book which I looked at every day. I was determined to learn what those words on the pages meant. With much resolve, I learned how to read by asking the few people in my family who knew how to read to teach me. It was a struggle, but I was determined. Today, I speak and can read in four different languages. Books made this possible for me." - Donald Dorcilus, Haitian Musician
