Power, Horsepower and Watts

Power What is power? Power is defined as the rate of doing work. P= Work/time Units: lbft/sec or Joules/sec How many repetitions can the weightlifter complete in 1 minute?

Horsepower What is Horsepower? Definition: The common unit of measurement of an engine's power. One horsepower equals 550 foot-pounds per second (the power needed to lift 550 pounds one foot off the ground in one second or one pound 550 feet up in the same time)

Horsepower 550 ft ·lb/sec

Horsepower formula

Watts and Power What is a watt? Definition: A scientific unit of electrical power commonly used to describe the rate of energy consumption of an electrical appliance.  One Watt is the power equal to one joule of energy per second. Watts = Work (Joule)/second

Helpful conversions 1 Joule = 1 Nm 1000 watts = 1 kilowatt (kW) 1 horsepower (hp) = .75 kW or 750 watts
