IP3.7.4 Types of image Types of image

IP3.7.4 Types of image FeatureDescription PositionIs the image closer to or further from the lens than the object? SizeIs the image smaller or larger than the object? OrientationIs the image the same way up as the object or upside down? TypeIs the image real or virtual? The image formed by a lens can have four characteristics.

IP3.7.4 Types of image A real image can be formed on a screen or surface. If you place a screen where the rays intersect, it will show an image of the object.

IP3.7.4 Types of image A virtual image occurs when the rays of light appear to have come from a focus. But the rays do not intersect – there is nowhere you can put a screen to form an image.

IP3.7.4 Types of image Can you describe the image shown in this diagram using the four characteristics: position, size, orientation, and type?

IP3.7.4 Types of image The image is produced from a converging lens. The object is close to the lens. The image is further from the lens, larger, upside down (inverted), and real.
