Overseas trips in Geography Overseas trips in Geography Hawaii Hawaii The Amazon The Amazon Brisbane Brisbane Hong Kong Hong Kong Borneo Borneo Coming soon … Coming soon … Iceland, Kenya and Samoa Iceland, Kenya and Samoa Where, When and Why Where, When and 2

Where did the idea come from for these trips ? We go away with Geo any way then one day … The Students suggested going overseas 3

What resource or tools did you use? Loads of Google searching, Trip Advisor, Expedia and 4

How did you implement the trips? 1. Gauge Student, Parent and Staff interest. 2. Approach Management for approval. 3. Get BIG Deposits then … Go For it 5

What were the biggest challenges? -Long Distance Planning, -Finding/Verifying Information, 6

What impact has the project had on your teaching? I am way more Knowledgeable and Passionate about the locations we use as case studies How has this enhanced the learning process? If you are more passionate about it you pass on the enthusiasm Students can now teach students about what they have 7

What impact has the project had on your students? Students learn a lot more by seeing it for themselves, it becomes more real and they can visualise it later. Students learn life lessons when away Has the project enhanced the learning process? The students see that you are passionate about the subject, they see how the subject is relevant to the wider world. Students learn lots of Self Management 8

What message would you like to convey to your colleagues? There is a LOT of work involved in this but it has so many payoffs for both the Students and Geo; Greater interest in the subject, Students learn to manage themselves, Students learn to budget and manage money Students see another culture for themselves. It is manageable if you start to plan early The First one is always the toughest ! It makes Geo more real 9
