The Effects of Colonialism Mr. Hardy RMS IB Middle School

The Effects of Colonialism Positive Effects Colonial nations developed their colonies natural resources. Improved transportation and communication Built industries and improved agriculture Trained workers and provided jobs for colonial people Colonial nations built schools, hospitals, and sanitation facilities. Halted native warfare, barbaric practices, and eventually slavery. Introduced Christian ethics, democracy, science, and belief in progress Trained colonial people in self-government.

Good Effects of Colonialism Victoria Terminus in Mumbai, India. Built by the British government in British built railways continue to move 6.5 million commuters in to and out of Mumbai every day! Many of the infrastructure improvements built by colonial powers, like roads, railroads, bridges, dams and canals are still in daily use around the world today

Wealth was drained from the colonies and sent back to Europe. Native workers were exploited, working long hours for little pay. Colonists frequently held attitudes of racial and cultural superiority, and discriminated against native peoples. Native cultures were degraded and destroyed. Colonialism introduced previously unknown things like drugs, alcohol, criminal activity, and diseases. Feelings of antagonism and hatred toward colonists who were frequently seen as oppressors. The Effects of Colonialism Negative Effects

Bad Effects of Colonialism Racial and ethnic attitudes made worse by Europeans continued to be sources of conflict in many former colonies. Alcohol abuse, introduced by European colonizers plagues many Native American communities today.
