What is a Goal?  A goal is something you want to accomplish  A goal should be reachable or doable  2 types:  Short-term goal - (usually less than 1 year) to be accomplished in a short time period  Long-term goal - (indefinite future, more than 1 year) setting several short-term goals to achieve a bigger long-term goal

How to Set Short-Term Goals 1.Decide on goals and list them. 2.Develop an action plan to achieve goals. 3.Evaluate your achievement. 4.Revise your goals and plans.

“SMART” Goals Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timely Identify specific action or event that will take place Goal and benefits should be quantifiable Achievable with given available resources Challenging, yet allows you to succeed Time period for accomplishment

Where Goal Setting Can Go Wrong  Outcome vs. Performance goals  Goals set unrealistically high  Goals set too low, no challenge  Goals are too vague  Forget about goals, no follow-up  Too many unprioritised goals

Action Plan  Develop a list of steps you will take to accomplish your short or long term goal Example: CATEGORYGOALACTION STEPS Health/Fitness  Improve my level of fitness  Improve my eating habits  Get more sleep  Eat junk food only once a week  Join a fitness class  Ride my bike 3x a week  Read and follow The Canadian Food Guide
