THE HISTORY Rapping also known as emceeing, MCing, spitting (bars), or just rhyming) refers to "spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics with a strong rhythm behind it. Rapping is a primary ingredient in hip hop music, but the phenomenon predates hip hop culture by centuries. Rap music can be traced back to its African roots. Centuries before hip hop music existed, the griots of West Africa were delivering stories rhythmically, over drums and sparse instruments. Such connections have been acknowledged by many modern artists, modern day "griots", spoken word artists, mainstream news sources, and academics. Blues music, rooted in the work songs and spirituals of slavery and influenced by West African musical traditions, was first played by blacks in the Mississippi Delta region of the United States around the time of the Emancipation Proclamation. Grammy-winning blues musician/historian Elijah Wald and others have argued that the blues were being rapped as early as the 1920s. Wald went so far as to call hip hop "the living blues." Jazz, which developed from the blues and other African-American and European musical traditions and started around the beginning of the 20th century, "H2OGate Blues Part 2: We Beg Your Pardon America," and "Johannesburg," has been seen as an influence on many rappers. His collaborations with musician Brian Jackson have been seen as a major influences on rap music, in terms of sound and lyrical style. As early as 1956, deejays were toasting (an African tradition of "rapped out" tales of heroism) over dubbed Jamaican beats. It was called "rap", expanding the word's earlier meaning in the African-American community—"to discuss or debate informally." One of the first rappers in the beginning of the hip hop period, in the end of '70s, was also hip hop's first DJ, Kool Herc. Herc, a Jamaican immigrant, started delivering simple raps at his parties, inspired by the Jamaican tradition of toasting. Nowadays in the 20 th century the rap music industry is very vast, going from proper rap, to UK rap also known as UK garage or Grime. With thre big names such as, The Game, 50cent,Lil Wayne Birdman ect.

Audience Demographic The rap music industry have a wide range of audiences from different ethnic minority groups, the ages are usually from 13-25, because of the type of background and culture that surrounds rap music it seems that it does not stand the test of time, in relation to ages of audience members. It has been known that 60% of boys in the UK listen to rap music and 30% of girls do, so it seems that its more of a masculine genre than a feminine one. The audience demographic hasn’t really changed over the years, the same numbers are still coming up, although rap music is an extremely popular genre, there are some things that don’t make it that appealing. The main thing to do with this is the language. i.e. Swearing or abusive sexual language. Also the influence that rappers give off to the general public, most rappers like currently the rapper T.I.P is in jail. Most of them are also involved in drug dealing, so they are not really great role models for young children, this is why older people such as parents, carers ect. Are not into this genre as much as the youth are, so this is why the target audience is not as vast as other genres
