C3 confidentiality classificationIntegrated M2M Terminals Introduction Vodafone MachineLink 3G v1.0 2 What is VRRP? Most of us configure a static route to a single router on PCs because it is easy, but what if that router goes down? The PC client won’t be able to reach other networks, like the internet. VRRP (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol) is a non-proprietary redundancy protocol that lets you configure a group of routers to act as the default gateway for the purposes of backup and redundancy. Using this method, we can point the PC clients to the IP address of the VRRP virtual router so that if one of the master routers in the group goes down, another router takes over as the master and maintains routing functionality for the client.

C3 confidentiality classificationIntegrated M2M Terminals Introduction Vodafone MachineLink 3G v1.0 3 What is VRRP? (continued) In VRRP, there are two types of routers; master and backup routers. You can configure up to 255 virtual routers in a group. Master routers have a priority of 255 and backup routers have a priority of A virtual router must use E XX as its MAC address. The last byte of the MAC address (XX) is the Virtual Router ID (VRID) and is different for each virtual router in the group. This address is used by only one physical router at a time and is the only way that other physical routers can indentify the master router within a virtual router.
