Who are the Green Giants? The environmental club in Earl Marriott, sponsored by Mrs. Manning and Mme. Amyotte. This year, we are focusing on energy conservation.

What is our largest source of energy? According to the Government of B.C., hydroelectricity is B.C.’s “largest source of electric power generation”. B.C. Hydro serve approximately 95 per cent of the province’s population (approximately 1.9 million customers).

Why do we need to save energy? Although hydroelectricity is one of the cleanest forms of energy, it still leaves an impact on our environment. Due to the growing population, B.C. Hydro has to import electricity from the United States to meet our domestic needs. The energy they import are from fossil fuels.

What do we use energy for? We use energy for…  Passenger road transportation  Space Heating  Water Heating  Appliances  Lighting  Space cooling

We depend on energy. How much? The average household in BC uses about 11,000 kWh per year. According to the research done by a University professor Dr. William Rees and his student Wackernagel, if everyone consumed as much as Canadians we would need five Earths to support us.

How much energy does our school use? We use 28, 283 KW per week, equivalent to powering a typical home in BC for 898 days. (this stat is after our energy use dropped by 13%). You can check out how our school is doing at: /location/1279

Common misconceptions about energy saving actions Does it take more energy to turn a light back on than is saved by turning off for a short period of time?  No. There’s no extra energy used. Does turning my computer on and off stress the components?  No. Does my computer use zero energy if turned off?  No, only if it is unplugged. If the heat is turned down at night, will it cost more to reheat the home in the morning?  No. In fact, lowering your house temperature at night and when you’re out of the house during the day could save 5% of your home heating costs.

Good news. Simple energy saving actions make the greatest impact. Energy saving actions:  Turn off lights, even if it’s only for a few minutes  Turn off the monitor if you are not going to use your PC for more than twenty minutes.  Unplug your electronic devices (cellphones, laptops, video game consoles, computer speakers and microwaves) when they’re not in use.  Turn down the heat when you don’t need it.

Reducing energy use is a global movement

Change has to start small. Surrey is starting a new composting program to reduce waste, and it has been selected as one of the greenest cities. Why shouldn’t the group of committed students and staff in Earl Marriott make a great difference as well?

Energy Ambassadors Program Mr. Mackinnon, the head of the Energy Department, initiated the Energy Ambassadors program and Energy Conservation Cup. The aim of both of these programs is to save energy at Surrey Schools. We are saving both electricity and the natural gas.

Energy Conservation Cup We are competing against Johnston Heights, Queen Elizabeth, Frank Hurt and Semiahmoo Secondary schools. The Round One goes from February 25 th to March 1 st, The contest hours are Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We need YOUR help! It can be something simple as turning off the lights whenever you leave your classroom, or the commons’ areas if you are the last person to leave. We need your support to accommodate our ideas for campaigns and activities to conserve energy. The slip of paper handed out to you in the beginning is for you to keep as a reminder of your part in energy conservation.

We Can Do This! We are looking forward to working with everyone at school to save energy. Remember every simple action counts- turning off our lights, turning down the heater, unplugging our devices.
