When did Petrified Forest National Park become a park  It first tried to become a park in 1895 but congress turned the bill down. Then in December 8, 1906 it became a national monument. Finally in December 9, 1926 It became a national park.

Why Did Petrified Forest National Park become a park Why Did Petrified Forest National Park become a park  It became a park when it had to changed from a monument to a park because it could not be both at the same time. The Petrified Forest National Monument was created by President Theodore Roosevelt. He stated “that, …the mineralized remains of Mesozoic forests…are of the greatest scientific interest and value and it appears that the public good would be promoted by reserving these deposits of fossilized wood as a National monument with as much land as may be necessary for the proper protection thereof.”

The park is one of the best examples of the late Triassic period in the world. It features one of the world’s largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood. The multi-hued badlands of the Chine Formation known as the painted desert historic structures archeological sites and displays of 225 million year old fossils. New fossils are found every year!

How the park formed One of the 7 Chinle Formations. The 7 Chinle Formations. The Chinle formations are primarily fluvial (river related) deposits. They include the Blue Mesa Member, Sonsela Member, Petrified Forest Member, and the Owl Rock Member. The Sonsela Member is divided into three parts: the Rainbow Forest, Jim Camp Wash Beds, Flattops One Bed.

How the land is changing  Existing and continuing future water erosion, continually erodes the rock and other landforms revealing new mineral deposits and fossils. This exciting change provides the opportunity to make new discoveries of life 200 millions years ago.
