T HE H ISTORY OF L IBRARIES Terri and Noah

W HERE WAS THE FIRST LIBRARY ? The first known library was in Alexandria, Egypt. This library was started in the 200’s BC and 1,000’s of Greek document were found there.

W HAT W HERE THE E ARLIER BOOKS MADE OF ? The earlier books were made of clay, wax, wood, plants, metal, bones, silk and leather. Some items were carved into clay tablets. Others were written on paper from a plant called papyrus, then rolled up into a scroll. Early Books

W HO MADE OR FOUNDED THE FIRST LIBRARY ? King Ptolemy I Soter started the first library. He ordered many Greek scholars to write scrolls and he ordered many Egyptians to write tablets. Many years later the library got burned down in a big fire. There are still few remains of the library.
