NATIONAL URBAN DESIGN AWARDS 2016 STUDENT AWARD Call for entries The Urban Design Awards are now in their eighth year. Since being launched in 2007, the Award judges have considered over 300 submissions across a range of categories, highlighting some of the outstanding and innovative urban design work being undertaken throughout the UK and beyond from finished schemes to design guidance, student work and publishing. We are now calling for entries in the category of Student Project. This award seeks to give recognition to student work at project stage and widen the audience for current practice in urban design education. As such the winning entry will be published in Urban Design journal, alongside a summary of the shortlisted submissions. Eligibility:  The award is open both to individuals and groups in full or part-time education.  Entrants must either be students with current personal UDG membership studying at a UK university or students enrolled on a course at a UDG member university:  Entries will be accepted from others providing they first join the Urban Design Group (please see joining details on UDG website:  Both home and international students may enter providing they are enrolled on a UK course; unfortunately entries will not be accepted from those studying at non-UK institutions.  Submissions are not confined to urban design courses but the criteria (outlined below) must be met.  Projects shall relate to the current and/or immediately completed educational ‘year’.  Different kinds of study/project will be eligible but design must be the focus of the entry. Richard MacCowan, Using Biomimicry to Develop an Urban Design Framework – 2013 Winner Iain Brodie, Gallowgate Redux – 2012 Winner Lucy Montague, Situationist City – 2010 Finalist

Judging Criteria  Shortlisting will be based on both the merits of the project/initiative itself and the success with which it is communicated as a publishable article for the journal.  Above all, your submission should provide a clear explanation of why the project is an example of good urban design, supported by evidence.  Entrants should also pay close attention to the following guidelines when preparing their entry: The Selection Process Stage 1 – Shortlisting of Finalists A panel reviews the initial submissions to select four finalists whose entries will be published online. Finalists are also required to submit a 100 second video for screening at the Awards Event and subsequent uploading to Youtube. The panel (none of whom will be associated with any of the entries) will include:  An academic  A professional working in private practice  A public sector professional  A patron of the UDG.  An editor of Urban Design.  The Chair of the UDG Awards Working Group and the Practice Award Convenor. 1. Urban design objectives & analysis Clear, concise explanation of the urban design objectives and design criteria, informed by analysis and response to the range of contexts. 2. Quality of urban design Assessment of how the project contributes to urban design practice including aspects of innovation, sustainability, place identity, economic feasibility and community benefits. 3.Presentation Images and drawings should be of appropriate quality, be relevant to the project and illustrate the overall concept and spatial aspects of the scheme, development over time, including 3D images or photography of models. Images and text should be clearly cross-referenced. 4. Clarity of communication Clear writing style with minimal use of jargon. 5.Lessons learned Relevant and succinct conclusions which suggest what can be learned (positive or negative) from the design process. Group Work A great deal of work in urban design is carried out in groups and this is often reflected in urban design coursework. The UDG is happy to make the award to either an individual or to a group (as defined in the entry) but entrants should note that the UDG is only able to subsidise travel for one representative to the Awards Event (see below).

Stage 2 – Publication in Urban Design The finalists will be published in the July 2016 edition of the Journal Stage 3 – The Awards Event (London, March 2016) The finalists’ videos will be screened to the audience and the winner announced. The UDG will provide travel expenses for the student (or one representative of a group entry) to attend in person. The winner will receive an award certificate and a monetary prize of £600 courtesy of the Francis Tibbalds Trust (to be shared in the case of a group). The winning entry will be published in full in the April 2015 issue of Urban Design, along with a summary of the other finalists. Previous winners of the Student Award include: 2014: Sarah Cawrse, Designing Incentives for Healthy Lifestyles (UD130, pp.38-39) 2013: Richard MacCowan, Using Biomimicry Principles to Develop an Urban Design Framework (UD126, pp ) 2012: Iain Brodie, Gallowgate Redux (UD122, pp.36-37) 2010: Nick Thorne, The Shambles: A New Heart for the Osney Islands (UD113, pp.42-43) 2011: Chris Walker, St Paul’s Bristol (UD118, pp.38-39)
