GATES-MCGINNITY & INTERVIEWS, CONT. English II CP | Mr. Smith

Warm-up  No warm-up today. Please be seated, quiet, and ready to start the Gates-MacGinitie test when the bell rings.

[ Mini-lesson ] Concrete Details and Commentary

Definitions  Concrete details (abbreviated CD) are specific pieces of information (e.g. facts, statistics, description, quotes) that relate to a main idea in some way  Commentary (abbreviated CM) is language that explains how or why a concrete detail relates to a main idea  …So what? How do they relate to each other?

How do they relate?  Concrete details and commentary are a team. Word, Commentary. You too. Nice job, Details.

Not enough detail…  Without enough concrete detail, your main idea loses support and will fall apart

Not enough commentary…  Without enough commentary, your readers won’t understand what your details prove or why they are important My brain hurts.

Balance  With proper balance – two sentences of commentary for every one detail – your writing is well- supported and well- explained

Practice  Read the paragraph on your own  Underline concrete details  Circle commentary  Discuss with your neighbor, then with the class

Protected Writing Time

Agenda  Finish prewriting  Begin drafting  Revise (pay attention to concrete details and commentary)  Edit  ALWAYS check in with Mr. Smith before moving to the next stage

Homework

For tonight…  No new homework  Goal Writing due tomorrow  Student/Parent Info Sheet due tomorrow  Interview assignment due Monday
