The Inner Coach Workshop for CIO Leadership Summit Organised By: IDG, India

THE INNER GAME PerformancePotential < Performance minusInterference is equal to The Inner Game is played Against Interference What Causes Interference?

Typical Causes of INTERFERENCE Trying too hard Trying to impress Boredom A busy mind Anger & Frustration Lack of Self confidence Fear – of winning, of losing, of making a fool of oneself

Typical Causes of INTERFERENCE at the TEAM level. Rivalries No listening/ taking a stand Hidden Agendas Need to lead Lack of trust in other team members Lack of clarity about goals/task Fear – of ridicule, of being dominated THE INNER GAME - TEAMS

TEAMWORK - DERAILERS Last In First Out – Team members influencing the leaders decision by voicing their concerns/opinions in private. Falling Prisoner – Leader wants to be liked and goes with the consensus without “raising the bar.” Kitchen Cabinet – Leader depends only on a small circle of confidants. Fear Of Giving Feedback – The single biggest reason for team failure is for leaders to be afraid to criticize their subordinates and becoming indecisive. The Decision Is Final … Not Really.

S T O P STEP BACK THINK ORGANISE YOUR THOUGHTS PROCEED INNER GAME A SIMPLE & EFFECTIVE COACHING TECHNIQUE Plan Using STOP Pre Game Analysis Through The Game Post Game Analysis

STAGES IN MOVING TO THE FLOW STATE Noticing Focused Attention Self Two/Flow Unconscious Awareness Focused Attention Absorption

Challenge Flow State Low High Low High Anxiety Worry Skills Boredom Relaxation Apathy Control Arousal

IDEAL CONDITIONS IN THE FLOW STATE.. There is a balance between the challenges and the skills required. Action and awareness are merged. There is immediate feedback to one’s actions There are clear goals every step of the way Distractions are excluded from consciousness There is no worry of failure Self-consciousness disappears. The activity becomes autotelic, auto means self, telos means goal so this means that the activity is its own reward

Thank you !
