Tell the World By: Kara Monger
My Project – Our project assignment came out about the same time the cast of The View made their ridiculous comments about nurses and their “doctor’s stethoscopes.” I wanted to write a letter to The View to express my thoughts and feelings on what they said about nurses around the world. – I feel strongly about my profession and I feel like I am noble, caring person and I respect all nurses around the world.
My Purpose – I wanted to share with The View what I do everyday. – I also wanted to emphasize what other nurses around the world do everyday. – Nurses: Put others before themselves Work long hours Are on their feet constantly
Who Am I? – I am a 24 year old Registered Nurse (RN) at Sentara RMH – I am an Operating Room nurse – I can rotate as a circulator or scrub nurse – I am a preceptor – I provide care to my patients before, during, and after surgery.
My Letter This is the letter that I wrote to The View The Views Address: ABC The View 320 W. 66 th Street New York, New York 10023
Circulating Role – Interview the patient – Make sure paperwork is signed – Pull correct medications – Transport my patients to room – Make sure Anesthesia and surgical consents are signed – Maintain correct instrument counts – Administer blood (as needed) – Get the rooms ready for surgery by: – Getting appropriate equipment – Stock room for supplies – Keep my patient safe during surgery!
Scrub Role – Making sure surgeon has appropriate instruments – Making sure instruments are sterile and ready for use – Passing instruments to surgeon – Maintaining a sterile environment – Correct labeled medications – Maintaining a correct instrument count Dreamstime.com
Caring for the Patient – I provide care to patient’s at their most vulnerable state. My patient’s are unconscious under anesthesia and unable to make their own decisions. – It is my duty to make sure: – The correct site is being operated on – The field stays sterile – The right medications are given – Patient is positioned appropriately – The best possible care is given to the patient
The End Result – I did not receive a letter back from The View. At first, I thought I might get a response back stating that they were sorry or some type of apology letter, but I did not get anything back at all. It is possible that they still will write one back to me. However, I am not holding my breath. – All nurses around the world should put their scrubs on proudly. We are the reason healthcare exists and we make patients better everyday. Thank you to all of my fellow nurses that get up everyday to help others!
