 Verbs are sometimes described as "action words". Many verbs are defined as the action of "doing" something.  As an example - jumping, singing, laughing. But some verbs do not give the idea of action, they give the idea of the state of "being". For example - be, seem, belong.

 The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being something.  In a sentence, every verb must have a subject.  Example: During his party, Daniel broke up with his girlfriend.  He “broke up” is the action verb. And Daniel is the subject.

 Main Principle: Singular Subjects need Singular verbs. Plural Subjects need Plural verbs. Examples: [Sally IS a girl.][The boys ARE here]  Indefinite pronouns: anyone, everyone, someone, no one, nobody are always singular and, therefore, require singular verbs. Example: [Everyone HAS soup.] [Somebody has left his book.]  Some indefinite pronouns — such as all, some — are singular or plural depending on what they're referring to. Example- Some of the phones ARE missing, Some of the juice IS gone.

 NONE is one indefinite pronoun that can be either singular or plural; it often doesn't matter whether you use a singular or a plural verb — unless something else in the sentence determines its number. Example: [None of them CLAIMS responsibility for the accident.] [None of you CLAIM responsibility for the accident.]

Phrases such as together with, as well as, and along with are not the same as and. And compounds, while as well as modifies. Example- The mom and the daughter ARE at the mall, The mom as well as the daughter IS at the mall. Neither and Either are singular! Example: Neither of the televisions IS working, Either of the sweaters IS fine. o Everyone, Everybody and Each are always singular! o Each is often followed by a prepositional phrase ending in a plural word Example: [Everyone HAS finished doing his/her chores.] [Each of the teachers IS in a meeting.] o Even though teachers is plural, each is followed by the singular verb, is.

 Some words end in -s and appear to be plural but are really singular and require singular verbs.  Example-The news from the office is bad.  Some words ending in -s refer to a single thing but are nonetheless plural and require a plural verb.  Example- Our thanks GO to the volunteers.  The names of sports teams that do not end in "s" will take a plural verb  Example: The Miami Heat have been looking, The Connecticut Sun are hoping that new talent.
