Steps to an analytical paper…

* Create a cover page with your name, class period, date and title of the document.

“The Founding Fathers” Pat the Patriot 1 st Period Due date: October 16 th

* Type the paper (Use 12 point Times New Roman Font) Do not use bold type! The first painters …. The first painters …

* Double-space (no character spacing, no extra spacing at the top or bottom of your papers, no extra spacing between paragraphs)

How to “fix” a common spacing error— this is a 2 point deduction if it occurs Many times you will have an extra space between paragraphs. The easiest way to correct this problem is to write the entire paper in single space and then highlight the text and double space at the end. The other way to correct the problem is to go to the paragraph line spacing options from your home tab and select “remove space before or after paragraph”….this will eliminate the spacing error.

* Use 1” margins on the sides, top and bottom. This is an example of using 1” margins in your papers. Go to the File menu and select “Page Set-Up”. Then change the settings to 1.00 on top/ bottom/ left and right indent. Always indent 5 spaces when you begin a paragraph. Most of your MS Word documents are set at 1.25—so you will have to change the margins.

Always write using 3 rd person….do not use I or you and limited use of personal pronouns (he, she, it, we)…

Thesis Statement…should have Background information Title of article Author name Introduction of major points—remember kittens and cats –Ex: Conflict over representation, Conflict over proposed executive branch, conflict over ratification

More on 1 st paragraph—thesis statement * Write the first paragraph or thesis statement. In your own words, write approximately 100 words about the basis of the paper…like the DBQ & other formal papers do not begin with “This paper is about…” Introduce the author and title of the article that you are getting the information from in the 1 st paragraph.

2 nd Paragraph should include 2 nd paragraph contains your argument for your 1 st major point Include details about both sides of the argument LIMIT direct quotes—use your own words Use TRANSITIONS—do not jump from one topic to the next

3 rd Paragraph should include 3 rd paragraph contains your argument for your 2 nd major point Include details about both sides of the argument LIMIT direct quotes—use your own words Use TRANSITIONS—do not jump from one topic to the next

4 th Paragraph should include 4 th paragraph contains your argument for your 3 rd major point Include details about both sides of the argument LIMIT direct quotes—use your own words Use TRANSITIONS—do not jump from one topic to the next

5 th Paragraph— Compare/contrast In an abbreviated/concise form were there any distinctions among founding fathers— did any groups emerge favoring or opposing one side of an argument or another---you may use your knowledge of federalist/anti-federalist to help you here You may also use outside information in this paragraph to compare/contrast the differing points of view on the major issues that you have identified

6 th Paragraph—Conclusion In this paragraph you will identify your position on each of the previous arguments…compare and contrast the different perspectives of the founding fathers. Which do you agree with? Even though this is your pov…it is STILL written in 3 rd person

* Proof read and spell check for any mistakes. Watch your use of weak words including…says, a lot, very, got, get, there is, there are, there were, really, good, bad, quite, things, never, forever talks about, speaks of, tells of, about, this paper discusses…remember that a paper cannot talk!

Do not refer to historical figures or authors by their first names….you are not on a first name basis with George Washington…so refer to him as Washington or President Washington or George Washington, not GEORGE…or GW

Action words to use… The author (not the paper) contends, asserts, illustrates the point, examines, infers, states, concludes etc…

Due… Wed, Oct 16 th … Summative grade!!!!
