Love Songs

Discuss with the other people in your group: What are your favourite love songs? Can you think of any lyrics from love songs? What do those lyrics mean?

Today we are going to listen to a song called ‘All Of Me’. What do you think the song is about? Do you think love songs are honest? Do they reflect reality? Can you think of any lyrics which do not reflect reality?

First Listen Listen to the song. Do you think the lyrics are honest or do they not reflect reality?

The song writer uses words with opposite meanings to convey meaning. e.g. Your my end and my beginning. Match the words given with their opposite meanings.

Drawing me inKicking me out I’m so dizzyI’ll be alright My head’s under waterBut I’m breathing fine MeYou CurvesEdges PerfectImperfections EndBeginning LoseWinning

Second Listen Listen again to check your answers.

Lyrics Analysis 1 You will now be shown several parts of the song. Discuss with a partner what you think each part means.

Lyrics Analysis 2 Stuck up around the room are some interpretations of the songs. With a partner, walk around and match the parts of the song with the meanings.

Discussion How close were your interpretations of the lyrics to mine? Do you agree with my interpretations?

Function of Using Opposite Meanings Writers often use this to convey ideas in different ways from the common words and expressions of daily life. Thus, it conveys meaning more vividly than ordinary speech. When contrasting ideas are brought together, the idea is expressed more emphatically.

Gap-Fill Give every man thy _____, but few thy ______. Love is an _____thing, marriage a _____thing. Speech is ______, but silence is _____. Patience is ______, but it has a _____fruit. Money is the root of all _____: poverty is the fruit of all _______. You are _____on the eyes, but ____on the heart. It was the _____of times, and the _____of times.

Personalise After looking at the lyrics and the previous examples think of how you feel about a loved one. It could be a partner, a friend or a family member. Explain to a partner how you feel or how you felt about them using contrasting ideas/opposite meanings.
