Vocabulary 11 ◦T◦Toil (v) to work hard ◦V◦Vacate (v) to leave ◦B◦Besiege (v) to attack ◦C◦Censor (v) to examine and remove questionable material ◦C◦Constrict (v) to squeeze

Introduction Paragraph ◦ First sentence: Easiest ◦ Should tell the reader exactly the topic that you’re talking about ◦ DON’T TALK ABOUT THE WHOLE WORLD! JUST YOUR TOPIC! ◦ EX: The Volusia County School Board is in talks about implementing a school uniform policy. ◦ Middle: Optional ◦ Provide more detail about the topic. Maybe a quote. (Make sure your cite) ◦ EX: The News Journal reports that the Volusia County School Board met on Tuesday to discuss a much stricter dress code, “which could require students to wear shirts with collars and khaki pants as early as the school year.” ◦ Last sentence, 1 st paragraph : Thesis/Claim ◦ Needs to include words that indicate choice: “should” or “should not” OR words that indicate correctness: “is or is not” ◦ EX: Volusia County Schools (should/should not) implement a new uniform policy because A and B. (reasons or little claims A and B) ◦ PRO TIP: Don’t drag out the intro. Get to the point.

PLEASE GET OUT YOUR PRACTICE VLT! If we don’t finish today, it becomes homework!

Announcements ◦ Wednesday ◦ Begin VLT** ◦ Last day to turn in Argumentative Writing Worksheet ◦ Last day to make up Vocab Quiz 10 ◦ Midterm grades go in ** ◦ Thursday ◦ VLT ◦ Friday ◦ Finish VLT ◦ Reading Day ◦ Monday ◦ Last day to turn in IRP Formative #2 ◦ Vocab Quiz Lists 1-11 ◦ Upcoming Due Dates ◦ IRP Formative #3- Monday, December 14 th ◦ IRP Writing Summative- Monday, December 14 th ◦ IRP Crafty Summative- Monday January 4 th

Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph Little Claim/Reason A ◦ 1 st sentence ◦ Transition- should be a phrase or a sentence, not just one word. ◦ Should be a statement about your Little Claim A ◦ EX: One of the main reasons Volusia County Schools (should/should not) create a uniform policy is reason A. ◦ Quote to support your reason. ◦ Cite the source: The News Journal reports… Dustin Wyatt writes… (always present tense) ◦ After every quote: EXPLAIN ◦ Never leave a quote exposed. Never start or end with a quote. Always sandwich a quote in your own words. ◦ PRO TIP: Use 2 quotes to support each reason. Sandwich every quote in your own words/thoughts

Paragraph 3: Body Paragraph Little Claim/ Reason B ◦ Repeat the same steps as you did for Paragraph 2 ◦ 1 st Sentence ◦ Smooth, advanced transition ◦ State your Reason B ◦ Back it up with your thoughts and quotes from the sources ◦ SANDWICH ALL QUOTES ◦ CITE ALL QUOTES ◦ USE QUOTES ONLY AS BACK UP!

Paragraph 4: Body Paragraph Counterclaim ◦T◦Transition ◦N◦Need to show that this is not your opinion ◦S◦Some may argue ◦E◦EX: Though uniforms stifle a student’s creative development, they can also help students who feel awkward feel like they fit in. ◦Y◦You might even use a quote here. ◦E◦EX: In “Public School Uniforms: The Pros and Cons,” the author writes, “Similar to athletic team uniforms, proponents argue that dressing cohesively increases pride.” ◦P◦PRO TIP: I f you used a quote to support the counterclaim, you need a quote to support your rebuttal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paragraph 4, Continued: Rebuttal ◦ REBUTTAL ◦ DON’T FORGET TO SAY THAT THE OPPOSITION IS WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ◦ EX: However, some students will feel more awkward in a uniform. For example, regarding uniforms that require shirts to be tucked in, Grace Chen writes, “Students who are overweight may feel very self-conscious about their bodies.” She also writes that kids of a certain age are naturally more worried about their bodies, “ and wearing a school uniform will not alleviate this concern.” These quotes show that even though uniforms may help some alienated students feel more connected, it will only further isolate students for whom the uniform exposes or exaggerates features that the student already worries about. The quotes also show that all students, not just overweight students, have anxiety about their bodies, and, if students are too worried about their appearance, they won’t be able to focus on their school work.

Paragraph 5: Conclusion ◦ Transition ◦ Restate the issue ◦ Restate your position ◦ Review your reasons ◦ EX: The main concern for both proponents and opponents of school uniforms in Volusia County Schools is student academic performance. ◦ However, student safety and student equality are also important issues, and the Volusia County School Board should implement uniforms to ensure that these important needs are met.
